Elie Wiesel is a novelist, journalist and Nobel Prize winner. He was born an Orthodox Jew in Romania, survived the concentration camps and wrote about his experiences. He became a spokesman for survivors and dedicated his life to recording the horrors of the Holocaust and helping victims of oppression and racism.
Wiesel was born in Sighet, Transylvania on September 30, 1928. Growing up in his small Romanian village, Elie led a life with God. He grew up studying the Jewish religion and devoted himself completely to God. Although after the Holocaust, Elie’s view of God became distorted and his outlook on life was drastically changed. After his horrific experiences in the concentration camps, Eliezer vowed never to speak of them. However, in 1954 he had a change of heart. Elie decided that he must never let the Jewish people who were brutally murdered die without any record of their lives. Thus, he wrote his first book “Night”, a memoir of his experiences growing up and surviving in Hitler’s concentration camps. Elie Wiesel won a Nobel Peace Prize for his book “Night” and it was such a success that he wrote two sequels.
